What is “bleed” and how do I set up my files to account for it?
Bleed is when a printed piece has ink that touches the edge of the paper. The ink should bleed past the page trim to eliminate white edges after the printed piece is trimmed. In order to achieve this effect, the image(s) in the file should extend beyond the document boundaries. Your document page should be the same dimensions as your final trim size. Never build your bleed in to the page document size.
What is your standard bleed?
0.25"
Can you provide a layout showing the dimensions of my dust jacket
or case-bound cover?
Yes. CG can prepare a layout that shows the dimensions of the panel sizes, wrap, spine width, flap widths, etc. We will need to know some of the final specs of your book before a layout can be created: final page count, paper stock that the text is printing on, binding style, trim size of book, and in the case of a dust jacket, the width of the flaps that you desire. Contact your Sales Representative or Customer Support Assistant with this information and he or she will have a layout prepared.
How many pages can my book have?

The number of pages in your book must be divisible by 4.

(e.g. 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36, etc...)

Can you provide a layout showing the dimensions of my interior page?
Yes we can. We will need to know the final trim size of the book. Contact your Sales Representative or Customer Support Assistant with this information and he or she will have a layout prepared.

We also accept PDF files that are built to our specifications (see PDF Guidelines for instructions).
Please note these concerns regarding Microsoft Word files. Word files are very unpredictable when transferred from computer to computer. Word does not have the capability to report the fonts that were used to build the document or warn when a font is missing or has been replaced by a different one. These problems along with others cause the text on the pages to reflow and the graphics to behave unpredictably. Your safest option for submitting files you’ve prepared in Microsoft Word is to submit a PDF file. However, this too has its problems. Most PDF files created directly from Word will not have the fonts embedded properly. To help resolve this problem, it’s recommended to use the application called “PDF995” to create a good PDF file from Word. This free download is available at www.pdf995.com.

Do you have a Rich Black formula?

Yes: Cyan 40%; Magenta 30%; Yellow 0%; Black 100%.

Avoid setting up a rich black using 100% of all colors. This leads to increased dry time after press.
